Why Christians tend to be Republicans
A while back or for all I know they still do, the Sojourners had a campaign stating that God was not a Republican or a Democrat. However there’s a reason that a lot of Christians are Republican. The Democrats have a standard platform for being pro abortion. The Sojourners said that political choices couldn’t be made on just one issue. However, that is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. If any one issue is important enough you should by all means vote just on that. I really don’t need to elaborate on this idea. Beyond that, the Republican party also tends to be more conservative, especially with issues such as gay marriage. The Democrats seem to want to do everything they can to promote a special rights gay agenda that does everything from making (homo)sexuality a protected class to reciting Biblical passages that condemn homosexuality a crime.
There are Christians who are Democrats because they like the idea that the Democrats say they are the party for the little guy and helping the poor and such. The problem is, at best all the Democrats do is create a welfare state that makes people dependant on the government and doesn’t really help them. At worst, the Democrats really do everything not to help the average person. They do give a lot of lip service about helping the ”middle” class. Both parties should really be interested in helping everyone of every class. However, both parties have their flaws and while it is true that God is not a person and part of a political party, it’s an unfair statement that makes it seam like both sides have a good and equal number of issues of equal or semi equal value. Some issues are more important than others and that’s what decision making is all about, knowing what’s more important.

Make no mistake, gay marriage is the civil rights issue of the 21st century. You can quote from the Bible to oppose it, but I put more faith in the Declaration of Independence.
My grandfather was a Doctor of Divinity, and worked as a missionary and as a pastor for the Church of God for nearly 60 years. My grandmother was a board member of Women of the Church of God. Both of them were life-long Democrats, but had the good sense they felt God gave them to refrain from preaching politics. They used to pray for people with the same perspective as the one you just shared, asking God to forgive your hypocrisy. I hope He will.
yeah, I know a lot of christians who are democrats, more actually than are republicans… I know a lot of rich republicans, many more than rich democrats. I think I know why people are Republican, and christianity has very little to do with it.
Separation of Church and State cannot be emphasized enough here.
Just because you may feel that christianity condemns homosexuality, I feel that christianity teaches you to be more understanding of everyone, and that god is love, pure and simple. Jesus wouldn’t condemn a homosexual, he would hug them. The bible emphasizes tolerance way more than it teaches discrimination.
Just because you feel like democrats all support abortion, the reality of it is that many democrats don’t like abortion at all, just like many republicans don’t. Pro-choice comes in because a democrat doesn’t want to take away one of the three options (all of which have consequences) that a mother has with an unwanted pregnancy. And they know abortions won’t stop, so for the mother’s sake, they want it to be done safely at least.
You may feel like the democrats are creating a “welfare state” by helping the poor. Do I really have to explain how unchristian that thought is? I know off of the top of my head three families that welfare and other social programs have helped tremendously. My friend has two little girls and I shutter to think what would have happened if they hadn’t been able to get assistance after he was laid off at his job.
And about the middle class? Neither side is helping them all of that much now, they’re more being treated as cattle.
Republicans don’t see this stuff because to them, life looks good. They have their issues and whatnot, everyone does, but they want to help people who are already in good shape. Dems want to help people get into good shape. If you’re on the other side of the fence it looks a lot different, so try putting on a different pair of shoes before you put your foot in your mouth.
skwguitar, you took the time to do what I wanted to in your response. I was taken over by nausea, however, and couldn’t complete my post.
To the poster: please, remember Jesus’ words when you pass judgment. And I don’t want anyone to have “special rights”, just equal ones.
I don’t usually like to write about politics because it creates many enemies and begins the endless run of hate mail as you seem to have gotten here. It does however get more people to read your point of view so God Bless you for your bravery. Religion is another hot-button issue–for your to have chosen to write about both is twice as brave. I myself am a Christian but I don’t consider myself Republican or Democrat–I sort of just go with my gut each year. I thank God that we have a pretty good system of checks and balances in our Government so that no one particular philosophy can take over–Although Bush Bashers will disagree with me on that point and say it isn’t so and refer to the fact that we are at war. That being said, I think we as a country need to avoid Extremist points of view-I think they are dangerous. Let us all agree to disagree and try to meet in the middle somehow. We should form the Republicat party for those who are sort of both–or perhaps the Demoplicans? What do you think?

Compromise is good in a marriage but when it comes to doing what’s right, comprimise is not a solution but it’s caving in to pressure.
I’m all for helping the poor, but I’d rather do it personally then tell the government they have to do it for me.
I don’t know anyone who is rich but most of the people I know who are upper middle class are democrats and most of those who are lower middle class are Republicans.
Seperation of Church and state is not found anywhere in the consititution but it was written in a letter by Thomas Jefferson to a baptist group and it’s intent was to show that the Church would be protected from the government not the other way around.
